Good Afternoon,

 

Summer is finally here! Jump into NYC Parks outdoor pools to cool down, improve your favorite stroke, or learn to swim with our free aquatics program. Pools are open from 11 a.m. through 7 p.m. daily, with a break from 3 – 4 p.m. for pool cleaning. Visit nyc.gov/parks for tips on what to wear and bring, as well as tips for parents with young children.

 

Sign up for these remaining Learn to Swim sessions through the online registration lottery, then, read on below for this a list of fun events, programs, and opportunities in Staten Island parks this July.

SPRINKLERFEST 2017

Description: Sprinklerfest is a free, fun-filled summer afternoon event where we turn on over 30 sprinklers for kids to jump through, cool off and have a blast.

IT’S MY PARK

Description: Partnerships for Parks invites you to get involved in It’s My Park hands-on service projects in all five boroughs. Our It’s My Park program offers year-round volunteer opportunities — from painting benches and planting bulbs, to weeding and cleaning, and much more!

Deadlines: Applications are due Thursday, Aug. 1 for September projects! (Applications are due the first day of the month before the proposed project date)

NYC PARKS STEWARDSHIP: City of Water Day at Goodhue Pond

Description: Celebrate City of Water Day with the Stewardship Team! They will be pulling invasive vines around Goodhue Pond on the North Shore of Staten Island. This work will improve ecosystem health, help our native plants, and beautify this community park. Join to make our community greener and more beautiful!

LIVING SOIL: COMPOST TEA

Description: Think making and applying compost tea is too difficult? This workshop will walk you through a simple DIY brewing system that will cost under $25 and give you tips on making and applying compost tea properly. Get ready to transform your gardening game in a big way.

Description: The NYC Compost Project is hosting a workshop where they will discuss the basics of composting and how to troubleshoot common issues that come up when maintaining a compost pile. Take a deeper look at the inner workings of the compost system at Morris Jumel Community Garden!

SHINE ONLINE WITH LIMITED TIME! Cultivate Your Community Park Group’s Online Presence

Description: Partnerships for Parks Art Director Anne LaFond supports park group leaders to effectively communicate with the community using websites and other social media. At this workshop, she and community group leaders will share strategies that have led to increased membership, fundraising, press coverage, and more.

You will…

• Assess which mode(s) of online communication is right for your group.

• Learn pros and cons of creating and maintaining a website.

• Find out what makes for a winning Capacity Fund grant application for a website worth several thousand dollars in support from PfP.

URBAN FORESTS IN PARKS: RECREATION, REVENUE, AND HEALTH BENEFITS

Description: The National Recreation and Park Association is hosting a webinar where a panel of experts will discuss how they transformed their urban forested parkland into active, vital, green infrastructure that produces active recreation benefits.

GET INVOLVED WITH YOUR PARK

Description: Do you want to make a difference in your community and support or care for a park near you? At this workshop, we will share all of the ways that people can get involved with supporting parks. Meet staff members, and hear stories from experienced volunteers and community leaders.

The workshop will include:

• Who you need to know in NYC Parks.

• How you and your neighbors can spruce up your park with an “It’s My Park” project.

• How staff from your company can support a park.

• Ways to join together with neighbors who also care about your park.

REPLENISHING YOUR SOIL

Description: Join GreenThumb and learn how to keep your plants growing strong this season. They’ll discuss how to use amendments such as bone and blood meal to reintroduce nutrients in your soil. Amending your soil throughout the season will keep your plants nourished and viable.

GRANTS & OTHER FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES

 

U.S. FISH & WILDLIFE SERVICE STANDARD GRANTS PROGRAM

Description: The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service offers the Standard Grants program, a competitive matching grants program that supports public-private partnerships that carry out projects in the United States that further the goals of the North American Wetlands Conservation Act.

REUSE AND REPAIR GRANT

Description: Citizens Committee is offering grants of up to $2,000 to start new reuse or repair projects, to undertake related research projects, or initiate other activities which will help lead to replicable reuse or repair models in all five boroughs of New York City.

BEN & JERRY’S FOUNDATION GRANT

Description: Pre-application due! Ben & Jerry’s Foundation’s Grassroots Organizing for Social Change Program offers a one-year grant up to $25,000. Only groups with 501(c)3 or fiscal sponsors can apply. Pre-applications are required to submit full proposals. Check out their past grantees here to get an idea of projects they’ve funded.

WALMART COMMUNITY GRANT PROGRAM

Description: The Walmart Foundation offers a Community Grant Program awarding grants from $250 to $2,500. Through this program Walmart Associates support the needs of their communities by providing grants to local organizations. Groups applying must hold nonprofit status, be a recognized government entity, or a faith-based organization.

Date/Time: Rolling basis until Sunday, Dec. 31

HOME DEPOT COMMUNITY IMPACT GRANT

Description: The Home Depot Foundation offers grants up to $5,000 to 501C3 organizations that are using the power of volunteers to improve the physical health of their community.

URBAN PARK RANGER PROGRAMMING

For over 30 years the Urban Park Rangers have helped New Yorkers of all ages to discover the great outdoors, uncovering the natural wonders that exist right here in their own backyard. To find information about FREE hikes, campouts, canoe outings, fishing outings, bird tours, and workshops that enhance your outdoor skills, all offered in your neighborhood and across the city, check out Calendar of Programs.

 

WILDLIFENYC

Description: There us abundant wildlife in New York City – over 600 different species call the Big Apple home. From soaring hawks to curious coyotes, it’s no surprise that we encounter animals everywhere from our parks and greenspaces to our roads and roofs. WildlifeNYC is a campaign launched but the City of New York to increase public awareness about urban wildlife. After all, they’re New Yorkers, too! On the website you can report a sighting of healthy wildlife; as well as find information about upcoming wildlife programs adn volunteer opportunities. 2017 PUPPETMOBILE: CINDERELLA SAMBA

Description: This spring and summer the PuppetMobile will present free performances of Cinderalla Samba in parks across the five boroughs! A modernized revue of the classic tale set in the lush landscape of Brazil, this timeless fairy tale finds Cinderella and her Prince in a Samba contest at the Carnival Ball. Keep an eye out for an upcoming performance in a park near you!

FREE YOUTH SOCCER, FITNESS, and ADVENTURE RACES on STATEN ISLAND with CITY PARKS FOUNDATION!

Description: Register kids ages 5 -17 now for free sports programs this summer with City Parks Foundation! Help kids stay active, develop athletic skills, learn self-confidence, practice good sportsmanship, and make new friends! OUTDOOR MOVIE SERIES: JULY 2017

Description: Pack a picnic, grab a blanket and come enjoy a movie in a neighborhood park! NYC Parks will host family-friendly movie showings throughout the five boroughs. Movies begin at dusk. NEW YORK ROAD RUNNERS OPEN RUN

Description: Join New York Road Runners for free weekly runs in your neighborhood! Open to all ages and experience levels. Walkers, strollers, and dogs on leash are welcome.

SHAPE UP NYC – STATEN ISLAND EXPANSION

Description: Shape Up NYC is a FREE citywide fitness program offering classes such as Zumba, Yoga, Pilates, Aerobics, Kickboxing, and Senior Fitness! NYC Parks is looking to expand where these classes are offered throughout Staten Island. Please see the attached flyer for more information and host site requirements.
