Protest the Arthur Kill Rd Highway Plan

Urgent!   Protest the Arthur Kill Road Highway Plan!

Our tax dollars should not be wasted on building a highway through our community!  NYC is in a financial crisis!  Do you want a highway in our

residential area? Do you want the Brookfield Garbage Dump to be reopened, EMITTING TOXIC FUMES? Do you want

the RICHMONDTOWN LOOP, another highway scheme, built to connect into this planned highway?

Community Plan for Arthur Kill Road /

Alternative to NYC DOT HWR1140A/ CEQR  24DOT001R

·       Basic road improvements and/or turning lanes, where feasible, at the shopping plazas on Arthur Kill Road, near Richmond Avenue. Road widening, as designed in the DOT plan, should not extend to Clarke Avenue.

·      DOT proposal could be greatly disruptive, cause traffic congestion, create a dangerous public safety hazard. This could connect to plans for RICHMONDTOWN LOOP!

·       Arthur Kill Road, on the Brookfield side, was the location of a toxic waste dump, likened to the infamous Love Canal.  Drilling and disturbing the ground in that area could unleash toxic chemical waste into the soil and wetlands, and unleash toxic fumes into the air.

·       Private homes along Arthur Kill Road, already extremely close to the roadway, could have their safety in peril if the road was further widened in front of homes. Health hazards from motorists’ fumes would be a concern.  Seizing properties from middle-class homeowners for an unwanted roadway proposal would be particularly controversial, and an exorbitant expense.

·       Arthur Kill Road near Clarke Avenue is adjacent to a distinctive historical district, the United Hebrew Cemetery, residential areas, and is near St. Patrick’s Church, St. Andrews Church, and Mount Richmond Cemetery.

DOT’s plans could infringe on parkland, requiring state legislation for alienation of parkland. Brookfield is also an area of wetlands. Disturbing these wetlands can cause irreparable harm to the environment in this area.
